The Luck of the Irish… or Not?
It happens all the time.
You click one more record… and suddenly everything falls into place.
The missing ancestor appears.
The name finally makes sense.
The connection clicks.
Was it luck?
Granny Picklebean would raise an eyebrow and say… not exactly.
Because most “lucky” finds come after:
• searching every spelling variation
• checking one more database
• and refusing to give up
Oh sure… a little luck doesn’t hurt .
But Granny knows better. Be honest… was your best discovery really luck?
Is Genealogy Luck or Skill?
In genealogy, what feels like luck is usually the result of good research habits.
Experienced genealogists:
• search using name variations and wildcards
• explore multiple record types and databases
• revisit records they’ve already seen
• and follow even the smallest clues
Many records aren’t actually “hidden” — they’re just:
misspelled
misindexed
or filed in unexpected places
That’s why persistence matters more than luck.
The more ways you search, the more likely you are to find what others missed.
And when you finally do?
It feels like luck… even when it isn’t.
