Granny Picklebean Episode 4: Now You See Them… Now You Don’t

Now You See Them… Now You Don’t

Granny Picklebean has noticed something.

The more you look for an ancestor…
the better they get at hiding.

They disappear between census years.
They change their names.
They migrate “somewhere west.”

One minute they exist…
and the next?

Gone.

Granny says it’s not a mystery.

It’s a game of hide and seek.

And right now?

They’re winning.

Be honest… which ancestor is hiding from you?

Why Ancestors “Disappear” in Records

When ancestors seem to vanish, there’s usually a reason — and it’s rarely random.

Common causes include:
• name changes or spelling variations
• transcription and indexing errors
• moving across state or county lines
• missing or destroyed records
• using nicknames, initials, or middle names

In many cases, your ancestor didn’t disappear…

They just stopped being easy to find.

That’s why genealogists:
• search using wildcards and alternate spellings
• track neighbors and extended family
• follow migration patterns
• and revisit records with fresh eyes

Sometimes the key isn’t finding a new record…

It’s seeing an old one differently.
