Keep Calm???
Everything was going fine. Until the census disagreed with the tombstone. And the marriage record disagreed with both. Next thing you know, one ancestor has • three birthdates • two spouses • one mysterious disappearance: Keep calm? With THIS family tree?? Granny says that’s not chaos. That’s Tuesday. How many birth years does your favorite ancestor have?
When Records Don’t Agree in Genealogy
One of the most common challenges in genealogy research is discovering that historical records don’t always agree. A census record may list one birth year, a tombstone may show another, and a marriage record may suggest something entirely different.
These differences happen for many reasons. Ages were often estimated, information was recorded by neighbors or relatives, and spelling or dates could easily be misunderstood or written incorrectly. Genealogists learn to compare multiple sources and look for patterns across records to determine the most reliable information.
Conflicting records are not unusual — in fact, they are a normal part of family history research. Solving those puzzles is often what makes genealogy so fascinating.
